Biographical details

Dr Guitera is currently Director of the Sydney Melanoma Diagnostic Centre (SMDC) and unique academic dermatologist at the Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) as she is also Senior Researcher at the University of Sydney. After her fellowship in largest dermatology hospital in France, Dr Guitera was awarded the highest distinction for her PhD at the Curie Institute and SMDC on the application of instrumental techniques for the diagnosis of skin tumours. Since 2008, Dr Guitera has achieved global recognition as one of the top 10 researchers of in vivo confocal microscopy (RCM) with more than 13 publications (5 of them being the largest series ever published and 4 of them been published in the Journal of Investigating Dermatology (highest impact factor dermatology journal). With only part time research, and 4y post PhD, her H Index calculated in 2012 was 11 and the cumulative citations of her articles since 2008 is 488 (10 in 2008; 80 in 2010; 177 in 2012).

Dr Guitera was awarded the 2013 Wildfire Premier’s award by the Cancer Institute NSW for outstanding research. In 2009 Dr Guitera was part of the team that was awarded the Premiers Award for excellence in Translation Research at MIA in 2009. Dr Guitera was responsible for regular teaching of students at the University of Paris V. She has supervised 3 Masters students in France and will recommence supervision responsibilities at The University of Sydney in 2013 (temporarily interrupted given her relocation to Australia). She has been invited to teach at a postgraduate level in Europe, America, Japan and Australia. Her teaching skills have always been evaluated as very good to excellent. Dr Guitera has more than 36 presentations on her CV. She has been invited speaker Nationaly but also Nagoya and at the Sloan Kettering, Yale, and Havard and recently in Oxford and London. She is a regular invited speaker at the American Academy of Dermatology, which is exceptional for Australians. She has organized courses in Modena, Sydney and Paris mostly with Pr Pellacani team (Modena), a workshop with Pr R Braun (Zürich) and a symposium with Pr G Jemec (Denmark). Dr Guitera has been instrumental in the inception, launch and coordination of the first regular multidisciplinary Lentigo Maligna (LM) Clinic in Australia, involving dermatologists, plastic surgeons, radiation oncologists and pathologists. Engaging different specialists means that optimal personalised treatment can be achieved and new management recommendations trialled. It attracts patient referrals from across NSW and beyond.

She is lead applicant on the Project grant ‘ANZMTG 02.12 A Phase III trial of imiquimod topical treatment versus radiotherapy for LM mapped with reflectance confocal microscopy’. The proposed clinical trial for LM has already attracted international interest and initiated international collaboration with known centres of clinical and research excellence with views to participation in the study.
