Biographical details

After graduating from University of Sydney Medical School (1981), I undertook physician training at RPAH during which time I developed an interest in palliative care. Subsequently I went to the Cleveland Clinic for 2 years as a research fellow (working on opioid pharmacology in cancer pain, specifically measuring morphine and its metabolites with HPLC) before coming back to Sydney to take up a position as staff specialist in palliative care at RPA. Later I moved to Westmead, then came to RPAH to be haed of palliative care. In 2007 I was recruited by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York to be the Chief of the Pain & Palliative Care Service. I joined MSKCC in 2008 and remained there until early 2016 at which time I returned back to Sydney to take up the position of Chair of Pain Medicine at the University of Sydney vacated by Michael Cousins AO, and also the Director of the Pain Management Research Center located on the Northern Clinical School Campus. As well as being a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (and the American College of Physicians), I am also a Foundation Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine. I also have completed a Master of Medicine in Clinical Epidemiology from the University of Sydney, as well as a MA in Appl Ethics (Health Care). My main research interests currently are cancer pain/cancer survivor pain; the comparative effectiveness of chronic pain therapies; the clinical interface with decision architecture science/social psychology/behavioral economics, especially as they relate to decision making in pain management and palliative care.
