Biographical details
My research background is in paediatric infectious diseases, in which I have a clinical appointment at the Childrens Hospital, Westmead and in the epidemiology of vaccine-preventable diseases, which was the subject of my PhD in the School of Public Health on invasive Hib disease. As Director of the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases, my knowledge and experience covers a wide range of topics with special prominence to pertussis and pneumococcal disease and use of the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register for vaccine effectiveness and data linkage studies
Research interests
My research interests are broadly in the area of the epidemiology of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs), including measurement of disease burden pre vaccine introduction, measurement of immunisation coverage and measurement of the impact of vaccines post introduction. I also have a strong record in clinical vaccine trials and was the Chief Investigator for a now completed multi-site national randomised vaccine trial of pertussis vaccine to newborns funded by the NHMRC. My major specific interests are in bacterial VPDs, including Haemophilus influenzae type b, pneumococcus and pertussis, including measurement of vaccine effectiveness and risk factors using case-control studies and linked data sets and post implementation evaluation of vaccine programs
Teaching and supervision
I am a major contributor to the Vaccines in Public Health elective provided within the Master of Public Health course run through the National Centre, teach in the first two years of the Graduate Medical Program in immunisation and the microbiology of pneumonia and in the fourth year in immunisation for students in Paediatrics and Child Health. I am frequently asked to deliverteaching sessions for various professional groups
Current projects
Post implementation economic assessment of vaccine programs (ARC grant with Dr A Newall, UNSW)
Evaluation of immunisation programs in children and adults especially pertussis and pneumococcal disease
The Paediatric Active Enhanced Disease Surveillance (PAEDS) hospital-based network in 5 tertiary referral paediatic hospitals throughout Australia
