Biographical details

Petra van Nieuwenhuijzen obtained her PhD in 2009 from The University of Sydney where she investigated the neuropharmacological effects of gamma-hydroxybutyrate in rats. Her PhD resulted in 4 publications and she was awarded the School of Psychology publication prize. Following the completion of her PhD she relocated to France to work at INSERM Unit 930 Brain and Imaging in Tours. There she investigated the effect of anti-depressant treatment in mice with diverging stress response and set up in situ hybridization to look at mRNA expression in the brain. She returned to the University of Sydney to work in the School of Pharmacy researching GABAA receptors in 2011. Her work has a strong focus on neuropharmacology. More recently she has been researching novel treatment options for stroke recovery.
