Biographical details

Following undergraduate and early postgraduate general medical training at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, Richard Hillman underwent specialist training in HIV medicine and Sexual Health in London, England. He ran a large HIV unit in east London, before moving back to Scotland.

Research interests

He has broad research interests in Sexual Health, including clinical aspects of HIV, the diagnosis of sexually transmitted infections and vulnerable populations. His doctorate was in the molecular epidemiology of Human Papillomaviruses. This remains his principle research focus, particularly when infection is associated with the development of cancers in immunosuppressed individuals. HIs research output includes over 70 peer reviewed articles and 100 presentations at local and international meetings. He currently has a number of ongoing projects, particularly focussed on the prevention and early diagnosis of anal cancer. Heserves on a number of University and professional committees, as well as being a Joint Editor of "Sexual Health", a leading, peer-reviewed journal in the field. He has also conducted professional examinations and been on the organizing committeed of both local and international conferences.

Teaching and supervision

He his Course Director of the University of Sydney Masters Porgram in HIV, STIs & Sexual Health. This is one of the largest of its kind in Australia, with approximately 350 enrolments per year. Details can be found athttp://sydney.edu.au/medicine/wsshc/education/index.php

Approximately 50% of students are international, coming from a wide range of countries and educational backgrounds.

Current projects

Chief Principle Investigator of the Study for the Prevention of Anal Cancer (SPANC). This is a five year NHMRC/Cancer Council funded prospective study of the natural history of anal HPV infections and their neoplastic consequences.

Women and Anal Neoplasia (WAN) Study. This is investigating anal HPV infections in women with a history of cervical, vaginal and vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia/cancer.

Transplant and Anal Neoplasia (TAN) Study. This is investigating anal HPV infections in solid organ transplant recipients.

Associations

Past Chair of the Education Committee and President of the Australasian Chapter of Sexual Health Medicine, Royal Australasian College of Physicians

Current Chair of the Australasian Sexual Health Alliance (http://www.sexualhealthalliance.org.au/index.php/home/member-organisations) This is the peak multidisciplinary professional body in Sexual Health
