Biographical details

Dr Swaminathan is a Clinical Immunologist, specialising in understanding the role that microRNAs (miRNAs) play in various disease models. After completing his Ph.D. at St Vincent's Centre for Applied Medical Research (UNSW) under Prof Tony Kelleher, where he investigated the role of miRNAs in HIV-1 pathogenesis, Dr Swaminathan was a Post-doctoral fellow at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (Frederick, MD, USA) under Dr Tomozumi Imamichi and Dr Cliff Lane. Using the latest RNA sequencing technologies, he was involved with research that described 6 novel miRNAs in macrophages treated with IL-27. Since returning to Australia in late 2013, Sanjay continues to be involved with miRNA research and has ongoing clinical interests in HIV/AIDS and autoimmune disorders. He hopes that miRNAs may be useful biomarkers for various disease models in the future.

Research interests

In the last 15 years, miRNAs have emerged as critical regulators of gene expression. Dr Swaminathan's main research interest is understanding the role these small RNAs (particularly miRNAs) have in modulating cytokines (and other proteins) in various disease models, such as in HIV/AIDS and in Multiple Sclerosis. This knowledge may be used to identify new protein targets important in disease pathogenesis that may lead to novel therapies or as a biomarker of disease activity. Dr Swaminathan is particularly interested in using new RNA sequencing technologies to identify important differentially expressed miRNAs in disease.
