Biographical details

Professor Saad's research interest is in progressive renal disease and metabolic disease. She has published extensively in the area. Most of my manuscripts are published in high ranking journals, such as JASN (top in the field; IF 9.34), Kidney International (IF 8.563), Diabetologia (IF 6.88), FASEB Journal (IF 5.704), Scientific Reports (IF 5.228), IJBCB (IF 4.24) and AJP-Renal Physiology (IF 3.79, sandstone Journal). My work is cited >2000 x (700 x since 2012). Some articles are cited > 130 times, an outstanding achievement especially since 70% of my publications were published after 2013 and few are still in Press. My h-index is 18 (google scholar) and my RG score to 49.66 (higher than 97.5% of ResearchGate members). She has successfully supervised 7 PhDs, 6 MSc, 1 Honours, and 2 summer students to completion and is currently supervising 3 PhD students affiliated with the University of Sydney and 1 PhD students affiliated with the University of Technology Sydney. She has expertise in diabetic kidney disease, fibrosis, oxidative stress, mitochondrial function and mitochondrial DNA quantitation. Her current work examines the effect of maternal influences including obesity and smoking on offspring predisposition to kidney disease, epigenetic regulation in disease development and novel therapies for glycaemic control and renal fibrosis.

Research interests

My primary research focus is in the area of metabolic disease and microvascular/ macrovascular complications of diabetes, including nephropathy and endothelial dysfunction and maternal programming and its effect on offspring predisposition to chronic kidney disease.

Teaching and supervision

Professor Saad has successfully supervised 7 PhD students, 6 Master, 1 honours and 2 summer studentsto competion. All of whom have had successful career post-graduation.In addition, she is teaching Medical students (MD program, Northern clinical school) and undergraduate medical science and sport science students (University of Technology Sydney), Renal Physiology and Pathophysiology.Her teaching was acknowledged by multiple teaching awards and is of a very high standard with an overall teaching score of 4.42/5.

She is currently supervising 6 PhD students and one Medical student under the New MD program (Northern Clinical School).

Associations

Prof Saad is associated to Prof Carol Pollock and is a long term collaborator ofProf Hui Chen (University of Technology Sydney) and Prof Ewa Goldys (Macquarie University). She also has multiple international and national collaborators. She has strong collaborations with Biotech and pharmaceutical companies.

Awards and honours

Prof Saad has been successful in obtaining multiple national and internal competitive grants and industrial investment. Her research has attracted ~$4.5 M from both competitive grant schemes and industrial investment. She has had multiple successful category 1 and 2 grants, most recently from the National Health and Medical Research Council, The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Diabetes Australia Research Trust and Rebecca Cooper Foundation in addition to multiple local and commercial grants and philanthropic support. She is the recipient of multiple teaching and travel awards, and was the runner up for the Best Scientific Award (Australia and NewZealand Society of Nephrology). Shewas chosen by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation as one of the top 7 future Research Leaders in Australia. Her work was the subject of a distinction in scholarship award from the American Physiology Society.

Early this year, I received a distinction in scholarship award from the American Physiology Society for one of my articles which was selected by the Society as the best recently published articles in physiological research (http://apsselect.physiology.org/). Prof Saad has been involved in the management (Committee Chair) of the New Horizons Meeting(previously Combined Scientific Research Meeting) which involves the Kolling Institute USyd and the University of Technology Sydney. She has expended this meeting to also include Royal North Shore Hospital, the Woolcock Institute and the Centenary Institute. Since 2004, She has been successful in fundraising this conference from commercial sponsorsand providing over $10,000/year is awards for Staff and students. The educational, translational and commercial leverage that has resulted from this meeting at a national and international level (for example the establishment of the SPARK Sydney program in collaboration with Stanford University School of Medicine USA) attest for my leadership ability. She received an eminent contribution award from the Director of SPARK to recognise her efforts. She is also an organizing committee member for the international obesity-2018 conference, a member of the Scientific Advisory Board, Orlando, USA; an active member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology Meeting and a member of the Scientific Staff Council. In addition, she has acted as an interviewer for Medical students (Medical entry program) and higher degree by research (HDR) students and has been involved in the HDR students recruitment, annual review process, and students awards. She is a panel member of the HDR supervisory forum, anexternal reviewer on the University of Sydney TGA panel and a PC2 manager. She was involved in making policies for PC2 research practice and the decisions making related to Research Support Services and Research Infrastructure across the Kolling Institute.She is also a regular reviewer of multiple journals in my research area (e.g. JASN (top in the field), IJBCB, NDT, AJP-Renal Physiology, The Asia pacific Journal of Endocrinology, Kidney International, Molecular and cell biochemistry, Clinical Science, International Journal of Obesity, PLoSOne etc.) and an external reviewer for PhD thesis’. She is a regular assessor for different national and international funding bodies including NHMRC, Diabetes Australia Research Trust fund, Dutch Kidney Foundation Kolff Grants (Netherlands), Diabetes UK (London)and National Kidney Foundation (Hungary) and was a medical panel member of the Lebanese Diaspora Energy conference Oceania which included government representatives, the Minister of foreign affairs and over 500 people from the community which attests for my national and international standing. She is a senior editor for the Clinical and Experimental Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology.
