Dr Stephanie Mathieson

Dr Stephanie Mathieson (PhD) is a Senior Research Fellow in Sydney Musculoskeletal Health, a large flagship of >150 musculoskeletal researchers at The University of Sydney. She is based at The Kolling Institute at Royal North Shore Hospital. Her research focuses on reducing low-value care for musculoskeletal conditions, including back pain. New knowledge from her research has profoundly changed the way drugs are recommended for spinal pain. Her gabapentinoid research has changed >11 international clinical guidelines to improve the pharmacological management of patients with back pain and sciatica. Research within her NHMRC Early Career Fellowship (2019 – 2022) sought to create solutions to address inappropriate opioid analgesic prescribing in Australia and involved research in opioid analgesic deprescribing. Her research has been published in leading medical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, The BMJ and Annals of Internal Medicine, across various research study designs. She serves on several committees, has presented at numerous national and international conferences, and supervises Higher Degree Research students.
