Dr Turville’s research career started with a B.Sc Hons (First class and John Elliot Prize for Best Thesis in Animal Biology) and followed after being awarded a Australian Post-graduate Award for PhD studies at the University of Sydney on the mechanism of HIV transmission in dendritic cells.

Following his PhD studies, Stuart was awarded a KUL Leuven, Post-Doctoral Grant For Advanced Post-Doctoral researchers from non-EEA COUNTRIES for Post-doctoral studies at the Rega Institute in Belgium and latter was awarded a CJ Martin Post-Doctoral Fellowship for studies at the Rockefeller University in New York USA and the University of Sydney. This has enabled him to further his expertise in HIV transmission and further investigate strategies for future HIV prevention in the form of microbicide gels.

Stuart returned to Australia late 2007 to complete his CJ Martin fellowship. In 2008 was awarded a NHMRC Project Grant and in 2009 a NHMRC Career Development award. Stuart now independently runs the HIV Biology research group at the Westmead Millennium Institute. The lab currently focuses on the basic research of HIV biology and various aspects of HIV transmission and future strategies to prevent it.
