Biographical details
Dr Tanvir Huda is an experienced global health researcher. He has worked over 12 years in an internationally renowned research organization (icddr,b) and has wide experience of independent research in the field of social transfer, health inequity, maternal, child health & nutrition, health services, health information, universal health coverage, infectious disease and social determinants of health. He has an excellent track record of obtaining competitive or contract research funding. In last 5 years, as Principal Investigator he has secured funding through Gates Grand Challenges Exploration award as well as MRC Joint trial Scheme. He is also the Chief Investigator (CIC) of two large NHMRC funded randomized studies and Associate Investigator of a third NHMRC study. Over his career, he has secured several grants from different donor agencies including USAID, DFID, Rockefeller Foundation, WHO, UNICEF. He has authored over 30 quality publications in high impact peer-reviewed journals including PLoS Medicine and Lancet. His papers have been cited 332 times (h-index 10 and i10-index of 14). He has very strong data analysis skills and has demonstrated experience in the management and analysis of large complex health datasets using a broad range of advanced statistical methods. He has taught a number of courses in the MIPH program at the University of Sydney.
Research interests
Overall Dr Huda's research interests lie in testing innovative solutions to priority health and nutrition problems of women and children in low income settings by conducting large scale cluster randomised trials. He is also interested in evaluating large-scale health and nutrition program using experimental and quasi experimental designs.Currently, his research focuses on developing and testing innovative nutrition-sensitive interventions. He believe nutrition-sensitive interventions and programmes in agriculture, social safety nets, women empowerment and education have enormous potential to improve health and nutrition of women and children in low- and middle-income countries. Currently he is testing the effect of social safety nets and nutrition education through mobile communication on child hood stunting in Bangladesh through a large randomised control trial. He is also planning to build new research proposals based on similar sets of interventions in South east Asia and Africa. Besides this, he also intend to develop a new application based on my current work on Lactoferrin ( e.g. preventing anaemia in infants and reducing risk of infections with Lactoferrin or using Lactoferrin for in-patient nutrition rehabilitation of children with complicated severe acute malnutrition).
Teaching and supervision
Dr Huda has experience both in curriculum development and teaching in post graduate public health. He has been giving lecturers in several units of master’s in international public health program at Sydney School of Public Health since 2014. He believe in the effectiveness of action-oriented and participatory learning. For instance, in his lecture on Cluster Randomized trial in low- and middle-income countries, students frequently work in small groups to discuss a specific reading or undertake exercise independently or in a group. Students develop their own thinking through these activities. Also, in all his other lectures students are encouraged to participate frequently and give their comments on specific issues.
