Biographical details

Tim Usherwood is Professor and Head of the Department of General Practice, Sydney Medical School (Westmead), University of Sydney, and is a clinical academic at Westmead Hospital. He has worked as a general practitioner at the community-controlled Aboriginal Medical Service Western Sydney since 1997.

Professor Usherwood's research focuses on the evaluation of interventions to improve health outcomes in chronic disease & primary care. He has particular interests in access to health care, asthma, depression, vascular disease and chronic kidney disease. He has published over 120refereed research papers on these and other health-related topics, in Australia and the UK. He has also published many other articles, book chapters and books. He has been a Chief Investigator on seven NHMRC-funded research projects (three current) and a large number of other studies using a range of quantitative, qualitative and mixed research methods.

Professor Usherwood is Chairperson of the Diagnostics Expert Advisory Panel of the National Prescribing Service, and of the Advisory Board of the APHCRI Centre for Research Excellence in the Finance and Economics of Primary Care. He is an Associate of the Menzies Centre for Health Policy and a member of the Research Translation Faculty of the NHMRC. He is a member of the Editorial Executive of Australian Prescriber, and was a member of the Medical Journal of Australia's Content Review Committee 2002-2012.

Professor Usherwood has a strong record in health professional education and management. From 2001 to 2008 he served as foundation Chairperson of WentWest Ltd, the regional general practice training provider (RTP) for western Sydney. In 2006 he led WentWest to become the only integrated RTP and division of general practice in Australia. In 2011 WentWest was announced as one of the first wave Medicare Locals, and the first in the Sydney region. Professor Usherwood now serves as Deputy Chair of WentWest and as Chair of its Clinical Governance Committee.

For four years 2004-2007 Professor Usherwood chaired the final year of the University of Sydney Medical Program. He is a member of the International Advisory Board of Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS), Nepal, and in 2012 was co-chair of an international review of the medical program at PAHS. Professor Usherwood has been a member of several Australian Medical Council accreditation teams for Australasian medical schools and colleges and has led three of these.

Research interests

Evaluation of clinical, educational and systemic interventions to improve health outcomes in general practice and primary care, using quantitative, qualitative and mixed methodologies, especially in chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, asthma and depression.
