Dr Vlasios (Bill) Brakoulias

Dr Brakoulias is currently in a conjoint academic position at Nepean Hospital. He is the coordinator of the Nepean Clinical School medical student teaching program in Psychiatry and the coordinator of written assessment for the discipline of Psychiatry. Dr Brakoulias is a member of the editorial committee of Australasian Psychiatry. He has been a successful recipient of several competitive research grants from the Nepean Medical Research Foundation, the Pfizer Neuroscience Grant Program and the University of Sydney. Dr Brakoulias is also a staff specialist working as a consultant psychiatrist in the acute psychiatric unit of Nepean Hospital. Dr Brakoulias is an accredited examiner with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) and Chair of the Network Governance Committee for the Sydney West andGreater Southern registrar training zone.He also works closely with the Nepean Anxiety Disorders Clinic where he persues his clinical interest in the diagnosis and treatment of anxiety disorders, in particular obsessive-compulsive disorders.[Hide detail]
Dr Brakoulias completed his PhD in 2012 where he assessed for subtypes of obsessive-compulsive disorder. He is the chief investigator in a large longitudinal assessmentof the characteristics of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder called The Nepean OCD Study. This study is continuing to recruit participants with OCD. He is particularly interested in the role of belief in obsessive-compulsive disorder and other mental disorders. During his fellowship with the Institute of Psychiatry he assessed psychotherapeutic interventions for delusions and other abberant beliefs. Dr Brakoulias gives lectures and tutorials to medical students on the topic of schizophrenia. He delivers skills based sessions relating to cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and side effects of psychotropic medication. Dr Brakoulias regularly gives talks to registrars, resident medical officers, general practitioners and community groups. He has presented at local and international psychiatric conferences.
