Biographical details

Bill has more than 20 years’ experience in strategy and regulatory framework development, policy analysis, program planning, specification, evaluation and teaching in public health at national and international levels; his main focus is prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). He has provided leadership at senior levels of government in capacity building for evidence-informed policy and practice across the spectrum of public health issues and strategies, especially prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) through tobacco control, physical activity promotion, obesity control and other population health strategies. He is the Executive Office and Principal Research Fellow at the Prevention Research Collaboration.

Research interests

Bill Bellew's passion is research into the prevention of NCDs. Key interests include promotion of increased physical actvity and reduced sedentary behaviour as well as obesity prevention and tobacco control. He is interested in strategic approaches through "settings" as well as through social marketing and mass media, In recent yearshe hasworked extensively with the BloombergGlobal Initiative on tobacco control, notably in India and in the Philippines. He has undertaken evidence reviews for Government Departments in Australia and has been invoved in evidence reviews for WHO (Euro) on behaviour change strategies and (WPRO) on marketing that impacts on childrent and adolescents. He is interested in systems and interventions to increase the uptake of evidence by policymakers and the translation of evidence into effective, sustainble policies and interventions.

Teaching and supervision

Teaching interests focus on the prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs); leadership development and evidence trabnslation.
