Biographical details

Professor Woosung Sohn is Chair of Population Oral Health in the University of Sydney School of Dentistry. He leads the research and teaching in population oral health at the Sydney Dental School, and works closely with NSW Health and local health districts to develop a population oral health research strategy aligned with the state's needs and school priorities.

Before joining the University of Sydney, Professor Sohn served as Director of the Advanced Specialty Education Program in Dental Public Health; and was an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Health Services Research at Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine where he still holds an adjunct appointment. Professor Sohn has received DDS, and MS and PhD in Preventive Dentistry from Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea. He has also received Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) in Epidemiology from the University of Michigan School of Public Health. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Dental Public Health. In 2015, he was awarded a $2.8 million Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant entitled“Transformative, Team-based Dental Care for Vulnerable Children: Integrated Training and Practice”where he serves Program Director / Principal Investigator. Currently, he serves as Editor of the Journal of Evidence-Based Dental Practice, and as an editorial board member of the Journal of Public Health Dentistry.

Research interests

Professor Sohn’s main research interests primarily focus on reducing oral health disparities by understanding and addressing various factors related to oral disease, and by health services research to improve access, utilization, and delivery of quality dental care. He served as deputy director of the Detroit Center for Research on Oral Health Disparities at the University of Michigan, and has been involved in the Center for Research to Evaluate & Eliminate Dental Disparities at Boston University. Another research focus of his is to better understand and improve access to and utilization of dental health care, particularly among underserved populations. This research involves analysis of large datasets including dental claims databases and national survey datasets. He has conducted crucial projects evaluating State-level oral health policy in the U.S. in collaboration with State department of public health in Michigan, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Another research focus of his is children’s water consumption patterns as it is a key aspect related to the concentration fluoride in public water fluoridation. His early publications and then more current updated results have provided key evidence to the 2015 adjustment of USPHS recommendation of optimum fluoride concentration in drinking water to 0.7 ppmF from the 1962 recommendation of 0.7-1.2ppmF by climate zone.

Teaching and supervision

Professor Sohn’s teaching includes Oral Epidemiology, Dental Public Health, and Evidence-based Dentistry. Critical thinking and evidence-based practice has been a core aim of his educational efforts. He has directed Advanced Education Program in Dental Public Health that includes Residency in Dental Public Health, Masters' in Science (MS) and Doctor of Science in Dentistry (DScD). All of these programs, upon completion, enable students to competently engage in research, education, and dental public health practice. Also, the graduates are educationally eligible for board certification in ADA-recognized specialty in Dental Public Health. In 2015, he was awarded a competitive post-graduate training grant from US Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) for a combined DPH-Pediatric Dentistry residency training program entitled “Team-based Dental Care for Vulnerable Children: Integrated Training and Practice”. This project is framed around the concept of interdisciplinary and evidence-based care, and its implementation is expected to contribute to cultural changes of dental education and care provision. Previously in Michigan, Professor Sohn served a key member of the Vision Implementation Team for curriculum change at the School of Dentistry, and created two new courses for pre-doctoral dental students: “Scientific Foundation of Evidence-based Dentistry” and “Oral Healthcare System and Policy”.
