Research interests

Intracellular Ca, Ionic Channels , cardiac pacemaker function, cardiac arrhythmias

Dr. Ju has made several important discoveries in her research career. She identified a novel persistent Na+ channel while at the late Prof Peter Gage’s laboratory (1990-1995). It is now widely accepted that this persistent Na+ channel plays an important role in ischemic and hypoxic damage of the heart and brain.

She brought electrophysiological expertise to Prof. David Allen’s laboratory at the University of Sydney in 1996. Since then she has developed an innovative research project focusing on the role of intracellular Ca2+ in cardiac pacemaking. Over the past 16 years, her research has contributed to a paradigm shift in the understanding of pacemaker function. She has been recognised as one of the leaders in the field, with an editorial in Circulation Research noting that‘Ju and Allen were among the first to raise the possibility that SR Ca2+release together with Na+/Ca2+exchange could be involved in normal pacemaking in the heart’.(Boyett and Dobrzynski, Circulation Research, 2007)

Her research in TRPC and store-operated Ca2+channels in pacemaker tissue has been recognised as ‘an important and novel discovery’ into the workings of the sinoatrial node, the origin of the heart’s pacemaker activity. (Stanley Nattel, Faculty of Biology 1000).

Very recently, Dr. Ju and her research collaborators again found the first comprehensive evidence of a new type of Ca2+ release channel in the mouse sinoatrial node. This study, which was published in Circulation Research as a feature article, identified that Ca2+ release from IP3Rs provides an additional Ca2+ dependent mechanism for the modulation of the heart rate. This research also leads to an invitation to Dr. Ju to speak at the ISHR XXI World Congress in San Diego 2013.

Current projects

TRPC gene expression and store -operated Ca2+ channels activity in mammalian sino-atrial node and their possible involvement in cardiac arrhythmia.

· Research will provide the first evidence of the role of TRPC Ca2+channels in cardiac pacemaker function, dysfunction and atrial fibrillation. These findings could have a significant impact on the field of cardiac research.

· Identification of the novel TRPC related arrhythmogenic Ca2+signalling pathway could be used to develop new therapeutic strategies for treating the dysfunction of cardiac pacemakers and atrial arrhythmias.

· This may reduce the need for artificial pacemakers and improve the treatment of AF, which in turn would improve patients’ wellbeing and cut healthcare costs.
