Biographical details

Dr Zoe Terpening is the Manager of Strategic Planning and Operations at Sydney Adventist Hospital Clinical School (SAHCS) of Sydney Medical School. She is also the Director of Operations for the Simulation Learning Centre, SAHCS, based in the Clinical Education Centre, Wahroonga.

Dr Terpening is a Clinical Neuropsychologist at Sydney Adventist Hospital. She regularly participates in outreach services to Dubbo and Brewarrina, the latter in collaboration with the Poche Centre for Indigenous Health, University of Sydney.

Dr Terpening has ongoing research interests and has published over 30 publications in the fields of sleep, ageing and cognition in both broad-based journals (Medical Journal of Australia) and specialist journals (e.g. Journal of Sleep Research, Movement Disorders, Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders). Dr Terpening has ongoing collaborations with the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research and the Department of Sleep & Respiratory Medicine at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, developing novel approaches to managing sleep-wake behaviours in neurodegenerative disease.

Research interests

Dr Zoe Terpening's research interests include the early detection and differential diagnosis of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease and the interrelationships between sleep and cognition in older adults. In particular, much of her work to date has been exploring how modifying sleep can prevent future cognitive decline in older adults at risk of dementia in addition to dementia syndromes affecting the posterior brain regions.

Teaching and supervision

Dr Terpening is actively involved in the development and evaluation of simulation-based training and curriculum delivery through the Simulation Learning Centre, Clinical Education Centre.

Associations

Dr Terpening is a member of the Australian Psychological Society, College of Clinical Neuropsychologists and the Australasian Sleep Association. She is also an Honorary Associate at Macquarie University.
