Welcome to the Discipline of Pharmacology
The Discipline of Pharmacology of the University of Sydney is the largest of its kind in Australia, with an extensive range of research programs and well equipped undergraduate teaching facilities. There is a strong and growing research environment in the Discipline of Pharmacology covering a range of research areas including neuropharmacology, pharmacogenetics, pharmacoinformatics and medicinal chemistry, as well as molecular, respiratory, cancer and clinical pharmacology. Collectively Pharmacology attracts close to $ 2.5 million in competitive grant funding.
Pharmacology is the study of the biological actions of drugs and chemicals, the various ways they work and their use in treating illness. It involves not only scientific experiments on chemical compounds which are, or can be, used as drugs but also concerns itself with disease processes. A drug is any chemical which modifies the function of living tissue. The search for a new drug may be based on the knowledge of the nature of a particular disease, whereas knowledge of the mechanisms of drug action may lead in turn to a greater understanding of the disease process. An increasingly important aspect of drug discovery is the identification of new molecular targets for drug action. The science of pharmacology is closely linked with chemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, physiology, and toxicology.
The Discipline of Pharmacology at the University of Sydney provides a vibrant and dynamic environment for conducting high quality research and teaching. Our team of Academic, teaching and research staff are well supported by our technical, professional and administrative staff and our extensive in-house facilities.
We are collectively committed to providing the best possible research and teaching experiences our department has to offer, so if you are thinking of studying here or you are interested in learning about the various research activities taking place within the Discipline of Pharmacology, we hope this website will provide the necessary information you require.
We are part of the School of Medical Sciences and the Bosch Institute.
We host the Adrien Albert Laboratory of Medicinal Chemistry and the Respiratory Research Group.
