Special Study Program (Sabbatical Leave)

Full-time academic staff are eligible to apply for up to six months Special Studies Program (SSP) leave from teaching duties, after every three years of service, to focus on their research.

There is an expectation that a substantial part of the SSP leave will be spent visiting another institution in order to promote collaboration and scholarly exchange.

Details of financial support provided during this leave are available in the SSP Application Procedure.

Policy and Procedure

Application Deadlines

Applications for SSP leave are called for twice a year and assessed by the Dean's Advisory Committee.

  • 30 June - for leave during Semester 1 of the following year
  • 30 November - for leave during Semester 2 of the following year

This lead time is required to allow you and your school to ensure that alternative arrangements have been made to cover your teaching, supervisory and clinical obligations during the proposed period of leave.

Applications must be first be approved by the Head of your Clinical School. Staff are strongly advised to negotiate with the Head of Department and the Head of School well in advance of submitting an application.
