Poche Centre for Indigenous Health

The Poche Centre for Indigenous Health is an excellent example of the power of partnership in achieving real change and genuinely contributing to closing the gap in life expectancy.

Established and funded by philanthropist Greg Poche, Poche Centres seek to leverage the best of the best in Universities with communities and governments to seek solutions that address complex health problems faced by Aboriginal people.

The Poche model is unique. Located within universities, Poche Centres work with leading researchers, alumni, faculty and students to bring their knowledge together with communities to find sustainable, workable, affordable solutions to health issues including Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, oral health, specialist medical, allied health, social and emotional well-being, chronic disease, workforce development and health promotion.

The Poche Centre at the University of Sydney focusses on evidence to practice. We use a combination of Commonwealth, State and philanthropic funds to partner with community organisations to:

    • provide specialist services for Aboriginal people including cardiology, ENT, endocrinology, dentistry, nursing, and allied health;

    • build and support education and career pathways for Aboriginal people;

    • develop opportunities for students and graduates to participate in Aboriginal health service delivery and health promotion, and build cultural competence; and

    • develop and sustain collaborative evidence to practice research.

The Poche Centre always works in partnership with communities and existing health and other infrastructure and services to ensure sustainability and promote the likelihood of developing solutions that work.

The independence and flexibility of Poche Centres enables innovative solutions that are not limited by program boundaries, funding pathways, or state and territory borders.
