Using-Evidence-in-Decision-making (Making Decisions in Clinical Practice)


This course provides attendees with an overview of current approaches to evidence for informing decisions in clinical practice. It is the first out of a three in a workshop series in Making Decisions in Clinical Practice. (Note: each short course for Making Decisions in Clinical Practice is independent of each other)

Course aims

Attendees will explore the development of evidence-based recommendations for decision-making options and learn how to conduct a rapid review for a specific clinical question. There will be a brief introduction to using the GRADE Approach and the development of an evidence summary for clinical practice.
This short course is particularly well suited to health professionals and other people working in clinical organisations/environments, but is open to anyone.
At the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Define Evidence Based Medicine, Define Patient Care
  • Describe how Clinical Guidelines are developed/Be familiar with different sources of evidence used in Decision Making
  • Appraise the best available evidence for a clinical question using the rapid review processes
  • Assess the quality of evidence using the GRADE approach
  • Describe ways to elicit patient goals, values and preferences
  • Find the best available evidence for a clinical question using the rapid review processes
  • Create and organise appropriate clinical questions for decision making
  • Prepare a summary of findings table and evidence resource for clinicians.

Course structure

This is a 2 day intensive course and written material covering all the topics will be provided. The course will consist of a combination of lectures, small group work and peer and instruction feedback time.

Cancellation Policy

Full course fees for each short course are to be paid 1 week prior to the date of the course. Cancellation after the full course fee is due will incur a fee of $100 per participant for administration. Cancellation on the day of or after commencement of the course will not be refunded.
All cancellations must be in writing and addressed to course administration.
