All applications for external research grants must be submitted through the Research Grants Administration and Funding (RGAF) unit of the Research Portfolio.

- Expressions of Interest for ECR - Biomedical 2012 NEW!
The 2012 program for Biomedical Researchers aims to give participants support in career planning, networking and the development of research capacities. The program is for researchers who are one to 10 years postdoctoral. It consists of seven half day sessions and a structured mentor program.

This is a joint collaboration with other Group of Eight Universities and comprises eight modules that explore various aspects of research project management.
Mid-career researchers who are new to the role of CI (recently won grants) or who are currently working towards being in a CI role (ie. who have already been involved in successful grants and have submitted grant applications with themselves as a lead CI). The program develops the skills required by those responsible for the management of research grants and projects. The focus of the program is on those who will be managing research projects, teams or budgets.

- National Breast Cancer Foundation - infrastructure grants NEW!
The aim of these grants is to help improve access to the technology, materials and core capabilities required by the Australian breast cancer research community. The grants have a maximum value of $250,000 per annum for up to five years.

Funding priority will be given to projects that strengthen Australia’s relationship with Japan through people-to-people engagement across a diverse range of sectors. This award is in Australian research income Category 2.

- Australasian College of Dermatologists - Epiderm grants NEW!
Grants are available to support scientific research, educational programmes and public relations activities in the field of dermatology.
Closing date: 8 April 2012 - Brocher Foundation - Grants for symposia and workshops NEW!
Grants enable junior and senior researchers to host events on the ethical, legal and social implications for humankind of recent medical research and new medical technologies. In 2013 there is a special emphasis on neurosciences and synthetic biology.
Closing date: 8 April 2012 - National Health and Medical Research Council - Investigator team grants chronic health problems research NEW!
This call is to select a team of investigators for a partnership centre in the theme of systems perspectives on preventing lifestyle-related chronic health problems. The formed partnership centre will receive approximately $4.3 million funding per year for five years.
Closing date: 11 April 2012 - Australian Research Council - Discovery Indigenous NEW!
These provide support to research programmes led by indigenous Australian researchers. The minimum level of research funding is $30,000 per annum and the maximum is up to $300,000 per annum. Discovery indigenous awards are also offered under this scheme, providing a salary from $85,000 to $180,000. This award is listed in the Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR) - research income Category 1.
Closing date: 12 April 2012 - Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade - Australia-Korea Foundation scholarships
These scholarships enable Australian students, graduates or researchers to develop a good understanding of Korean society, politics, economy, culture and the bilateral Australia-Korea relationship. The value of individual scholarships generally range between $3,000 to $10,000. This award is in Australian research income Category 2.
Closing date: 12 April 2012 - Multiple Sclerosis Research Australia - Project grants NEW!
These are intended to support scientific research projects relevant to multiple sclerosis. Awards will normally be made for two or three years.
Closing date: 12 April 2012 - Besen Family Foundation - Research grants NEW!
Projects may address the following areas: health and welfare; arts and culture; Jewish interests. Grants are worth up to $10,000 each.
Closing date: 12 April 2012 - Heart Foundation of Australia - Travel grants NEW!
These are open to early career researchers working in cardiovascular disease or related areas. Funding is limited to $2,000 per award.
Closing date: 13 April 2012 - National Centre for Vocational Educational Research - ECR funding NEW!
Funding is available to support early career researchers who have completed their PhD (or equivalent) no more than five years prior to applying. Funding is worth approximately $30,000 per project over a maximum of 12 months.
Closing date: 13 April 2012 - The Resthaven Inc Dementia Research Grant NEW!
The Resthaven Inc Dementia Research Grant is a larger grant for new researchers, valued at up to $150,000. This grant is available open to applicants in clinical/psychosocial research areas.
This grant will be offered in the area of Pain and Dementia. The key area of interest is pain management for people who have cognitive impairment arising from dementia.

Closing date: 17 April 2012 - Alzheimer’s Australia Dementia Research Foundation - Dementia grants NEW!
- Alzheimer’s Australia Dementia Research Foundation Grants ($50,000)
In 2012, there will be four Dementia Research Grants offered.
- Alzheimer’s Australia Dementia Research Foundation Grants ($30,000)
Two Dementia Research Grants of up to $30,000 will be offered. Applicants who are unsuccessful in the $50,000 grant round may nominate whether they wish to be considered for the smaller grants.
- Hazel Hawke Foundation Research Grant in Dementia Care ($50,000)
One Hazel Hawke Foundation Grant will be offered in 2012. Applicants in this category are exempt from the new investigator criteria, however they must not be of Associate Professor level or higher. This grant will be offered in the area of dementia care.
- CDRN Dementia Research Grant ($50,000)
One grant has been dedicated to fund research within a nominated priority area as directed by the Alzheimer’s Australia Consumer Dementia Research Network (CDRN). This grant will be awarded in the clinical/psychosocial research area only.

Closing date: 17 April 2012 - Australian Research Council - Linkage infrastructure, equipment and facilities NEW!
The programme provides funding for research infrastructure, equipment and facilities. A proposal must involve two or more Australian universities. The amount of funding sought must exceed $150,000 per year and cannot be more than 47 per cent of total project costs.

- The Medical Advances Without Animals (MAWA) - Research Grant
The Medical Advances Without Animals Trust (MAWA) offers research grants which MAWA considers will further the aims of the Trust to advance medical science and improve human health and therapeutic interventions without using animals and animal products
Research should be directed towards the development of methodologies that replace the use of animals and animal products in medical research, or provide animal free alternatives to existing research efforts

The International Seminars Support Scheme (ISSS) is an Australian Government aid activity administered by AusAID. The scheme helps to develop knowledge and technical expertise in developing countries, and builds linkages between the government, academic and community sectors in Australia and our partner developing countries. To broaden the scope of its support for research relevant to multiple sclerosis. MSRA wishes to assist researchers towards gaining significant support for research proposals in all areas of research. Applications are invited for grants to fund the earliest stages of a new research effort in order to validate a process or provide preliminary data

Closing date: No deadline (perpetual) - Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (MJFF)- Rapid Response Innovation Awards
The goal of this exciting program is to rapidly support innovative research focused on the cause of and cure for Parkinson’s disease (PD). In particular, MJFF is eager to fund high-risk, high-reward projects tackling critical scientific roadblocks that if successful, can open new avenues for PD therapy development. Rapid Response Innovation Awards is designed to support projects with little to no existing preliminary data, but that have the potential to significantly impact our understanding or treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

Closing date: No deadline - Cure for Life Foundation - Grants and Fellowships
The Cure for Life Foundation is a charitable organisation established to further the quality of medical knowledge and technical resources available to treat and care for people with brain and spinal cord tumours. The Foundation regards one of its roles as providing funding for small ‘one-off’ projects that have a clear relationship to the diagnosis, causes and management of brain tumours. Accordingly, researchers working in fields that are relevant to brain tumours are invited to apply for small ad hoc grants to support research in the calendar year 2008. Grants may be used for equipment, consumables, part-time staff support or ‘top-up’ funding for other grants.

The NSW Health Drug and Alcohol Research Grants Program is administered through the Mental Health and Drug & Alcohol Office. Each year a number of research grants are allocated to continue to contribute towards evidence based practice drug and alcohol services and programs in NSW.

The Foundation offers Collaborative Activity Awards to initiate interdisciplinary discussions on problems or issues, to help launch interdisciplinary research networks, or to fund communities of researchers/practitioners dedicated to developing new methods, tools, and applications of basic research to applied problems. In each case the focus of the collaborative activity must meet the program guidelines for one of the following program areas:

In an effort to expedite the progress toward a cure for type 1 diabetes, the JDRF offers a Scholar Award. This award offers sustained support for pioneering basic or clinical research aimed at fulfilling the goals of JDRF finding a cure for type 1 diabetes or its complications. The Scholar Award is designed to support individual scientists of exceptional creativity who propose pioneering research to reach these goals. The Scholar Award will fund investigators with extraordinary talent and vision, who are willing to take risks and attempt new approaches to accelerate type 1 diabetes research.

The Global Health Program Strategy invites established international organisations working on solutions to urgent health challenges in the developing world, including but not limited to HIV/AIDS, malaria, TB, acute diarrheal illness, and malnutrition. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation enables highly qualified, early-stage researchers from abroad, who hold doctorates, to carry out research projects of their own choice in Germany.

The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds travel allowances are aimed at supporting young scientists in acquiring experimental qualification necessary in basic research. Travel allowances are intended to enable the recipients to visit laboratories further a field in order to study clearly-defined techniques useful for their ongoing research and the work of their research group at home.

This funds short-term visits by scholars based outside the UK, the Republic of Ireland or The Netherlands to one of these countries. Visits under this scheme may be to consult libraries or archives and to exchange views or work with colleagues who have similar research interests. Study or lecture tours, meetings of a professional or vocational nature, workshops, symposia and international congresses are normally excluded.
