Nepean Clinical School

Sydney Medical School Nepean is one of the eight clinical schools of The University of Sydney.

Based in the Nepean Hospital precinct in Penrith, at the foot of the Blue Mountains, the school works out of two sites – The Nepean Clinical School Building and Level 5 South Block Nepean Hospital.

The Nepean Clinical School Building is a new building housing education, clinical school administration, clinical research pods and outpatient clinics. The building was purpose built in 2012 for student education with a 90 seat Auditorium, 10 tutorial rooms and a large interactive clinical skills laboratory. There are two large student computer labs accessible after hours to students.
The centre also works closely with the Nursing and Allied Health holding many teaching sessions and events. Over the past five years the NSW Ambulance Service has run its Extended Paramedic Care Course at Nepean Clinical School. The office of the Associate Dean is in this building with Surgery, Medicine (Education based) and Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Neonatology disciplines based here also.

Since becoming a teaching hospital of the University of Sydney In 1990, Nepean Hospital has experienced continued growth in its teaching and research. Our teaching hospitals include Nepean Hospital, Nepean Private Hospital and Blue Mountains District ANZAC Memorial Hospital.

The Nepean Clinical School presently supports around 50 students in each of the four years of the course. With its relatively high patient load in comparison to the student population, the School is able to provide invaluable learning opportunities for attending medical students and research opportunities for Australian and International students in biomedical, clinical and epidemiological research across all disciplines.

Future plans will see Nepean Clinical School as pivotal for further education and research projects including applications for specialist training positions. The clinics will be linked via telemedicine to all major hospitals between Nepean and Dubbo thus providing opportunities for services to our rural neighbours within a framework of education and research.

Student experience

“I really wanted to work in a community based hospital and what really sold me was the high student to patient ratio because I really wanted to get as much experience as I could before becoming an intern. Nepean students are able to get their scrubbing license in our first year so I scrubbed into orthopaedic surgeries right from the get go in my first year and that was really good because the fellows and consultants were happy to have us actually scrub into the surgery so we weren’t just observing.”
