Northern Clinical School

Students at Northern have the benefit of undertaking training in a range of different clinical teaching facilities. In their first year of training students are split between three different hospitals (Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH), Hornsby and Manly) for their clinical days. In second year students are allocated to either Hornsby or RNSH, ensuring most students get the opportunity to experience both large and small teaching hospitals before they have their clinical immersion in Year 3. (Please note we cannot allocate all first year students to the smaller teaching hospitals, but you will get an opportunity to experience this environment in third and fourth year).

Student experiences

What does a Clinical School day look like at Northern?

In years one and two clinical days consist of small groups led by committed and experienced clinicians at the bedside or in our dedicated education buildings. These cover communication, physical examination and procedural skills.

In stage 1 and 2 all students are allocated to a junior medical officer buddy, who offers support and guidance in optimising opportunities to learn in the clinical setting.

In years 3 and 4 students undertake clinical placements four days a week as the medical student member of the inter-professional team. On Fridays there is a comprehensive structured teaching program including clinical reasoning sessions, interactive lectures and practical workshops.
