Cross sectional (baseline) study

"The study commenced with a cross-sectional assessment of musicians. This consisted of two parts - a self-report questionnaire covering physical and psychological health issues completed by the musicians, and a physical examination of musicians by members of the study team. The questionnaire was used to provide an understanding of the pain, injuries and broad health concerns experienced by professional orchestral musicians. The physical examination was conducted to provide an understanding of the physical characteristics of orchestral musicians and to allow a comparison of these physical characteristics to other work groups or other community groups.

As well as providing a detailed understanding of the nature and extent of various health concerns and physical characteristics of musicians, the information from the questionnaire and the survey will be used to identify the main problems that might usefully be targeted by interventions in the study, and to guide the development of these interventions."
