Sound Practice Project

Sound Practice Project

The Sound Practice project is the first attempt to develop sound conceptual and theoretical principles on which to frame occupational health and safety policy and practice for professional orchestral musicians. The project comprises a unique collaboration of research academics from The University of Sydney, the 8 major orchestras of Australia, and the Australian Government, including the Australian Research Council Linkage Grant Scheme and the Australia Council for the Arts, who are working together to improve the occupational health of Australia's professional orchestral musicians.

This project addresses an urgent need to tackle the unacceptably high rates of physical and psychological injury by identifying, implementing and evaluating better health strategies in both management and prevention for orchestral musicians. Using experimental evidence, we can implement and support effective injury prevention and health management practices across the range of physical and psychological stressors to which professional musicians are exposed in their work.
