Sydney Medical School policy on expected levels of performance for academic staff
Under the current Enterprise Agreement each Faculty in the University is required to have a Workload Policy and Minimum Expected Levels of Performance for Academic Staff.
Undergraduate/Postgraduate Coursework Teaching by Research-Only Staff in Sydney Medical School
At its meeting on 14 February 2008 the Dean's Advisory Committee resolved that research-only staff funded either fully or partially by Medical School recurrent funds be normally required to provide a minimum of 20 hours of face-to-face undergraduate or postgraduate coursework teaching per annum.
Advice received from HR indicates that Schedule 2 - Academic Classifications of the The University of Sydney Enterprise Agreement 2009-2012 makes provision for this requirement. As a consequence, research-only staff in Sydney Medical School paid either fully or partially (e.g. NHMRC Fellows receiving Medical School funded salary supplementation) from 00000 accounts may be required by their Head of School/Head of Discipline to undertake a minimum of 20 hours of undergraduate or postgraduate coursework teaching per year. Hiring managers are asked to ensure that this requirement is included in the advertisements for new positions. Employment contracts for new research-only staff will be reflecting this requirement.
This requirement does not apply to entirely externally funded research-only staff. Exemptions may also be made for staff with major service roles. It is also recognised that there may be limited opportunity for undergraduate or postgraduate coursework teaching in some Schools and Disciplines.
