Neurogenesis and alcoholism
Primary supervisor: Greg Sutherland
Neurogenesis continues in the adult human brain in two niches, the subgranular zone of the hippocampus and the subventricular zone (SVZ) surrounding of the lateral ventricle. This relatively recent finding has created much enthusiasm that endogenous neurogenesis can be therapeutically manipulated to repair neurological diseases. However there is still considerable debate over the extent of neurogenesis at these sites and how it is influenced by different disease states. Our laboratory has a particular interest in the SVZ and how this neurogenic niche is affected by lifetime alcohol consumption. This project will use both immunohistochemical and molecular techniques to characterise and quantify the proliferative events in SVZ.
