Diabetes and Dementia

Primary supervisor: Greg Sutherland

Dementia will be become the leading health problem in Australia by 2050. 60% of dementia cases are due to Alzheimer's disease (AD). There is currently no cure or treatments that slow the progression of AD. Epidemiological studies have shown that type 2 diabetes is a risk factor for dementia in general and AD, however the mechanism is unknown. One possibility is that there is a reduction of insulin signalling in the AD brain. In this project we will explore postmortem human tissue using immunohistochemical, biochemical and molecular techniques to improve our understanding of how type 2 diabetes modifies AD risk.
