Indigenous postgraduate scholarship

There are a number of unique scholarship opportunities available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students studying at Sydney Medical School. Ghosh Family Foundation Deeksha Indigenous Doctor of Medicine Scholarship



Established in 2016 following generous gifts from the Ghosh Family Foundation who wished to establish a scholarship to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with their medical studies.

  • Eligibility: The scholarship will be awarded to a student who identifies as Indigenous (Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander), under the conditions set out by the University from time to time and who is in his/her first year of study for the MD
  • Value: $6,000 tenable for one year in the first instance and renewable for a further three years subject to satisfactory progress

The Graduating Year of 1977 Scholarship for an Indigenous Doctor of Medicine (MD) Student

Established in 2014 following generous gifts from alumni of the graduating year of 1977 who wished to establish a scholarship to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with their medical studies.

  • Eligibility: The scholarship will be awarded to a student who identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Indigenous, under the conditions set out by the University and who is in the first year of study for the MD
  • Value: Value: $6,000 tenable for one year in the first instance and renewable for a further three years subject to satisfactory progress

Rowan Nicks Russell Drysdale Fellowship

Do you want to make a difference in Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health?

The Rowan Nicks Russell Drysdale Fellowship is designed to support individuals wanting to make a contribution in the area of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and welfare. The Fellowship particularly aims to support the development of workers and future leaders in Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and welfare.

Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Eligibility: Australian citizens or permanent residents who have appropriate prior experience and/or education and wish to undertake approved programs / activities or further education or a research project.
  • Value: Up to $60,000 towards a salary, support or resources for a period of up to 12 months at a level commensurate with the Fellow's experience, qualifications and project proposal or a stipend and/or payment of course-fees to undertake approved training, education or research.
  • Further information: The Fellowship is awarded initially for a period of up to 12 months. Applications for 2019 are now open.

Herbert and Valmae Freilich Scholarship for Indigenous Australian Medical Students

Established in 2006 following gifts by Herbert and Valmae Freilich to establish a scholarship to assist Indigenous students with their medical studies.

  • Eligibility: Candidates for the Doctor of Medicine who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students (under the conditions set out by the University from time to time)
  • Value: $5,000 for one year

Sydney Medical School Indigenous Postgraduate Coursework Tuition Fee Scholarship

Established in 2017 by the Sydney Medical School Indigenous Health Strategy Working Party, this scholarship is intended to cover the tuition fees for students undertaking postgraduate coursework at Sydney Medical School.

  • Eligibility: The scholarship will be awarded to a student who identifies as Indigenous (Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander), under the conditions set out by the University. This scholarship is offered subject to the applicant receiving an unconditional offer of admission or being currently enrolled in a suitable degree at the University of Sydney.
  • Value: Full tuition fees for the student’s chosen course
