Our coursework programs are designed to complement the Surgical Education and Training (SET) program of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS). They are not qualifications to practice as a specialist surgeon.

Admission requirements

The Discipline may admit to candidature an applicant who has successfully completed a MB BS University of Sydney (or equivalent) and is currently

  • Admission to the Master of Surgery requires:
    a) a medical degree from the University of Sydney or an equivalent qualification; or completion of the embedded graduate certificate;
    b) a traineeship with the relevant surgical training program of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or equivalent;
    employment as intern/resident medical officer in an Australian hospital, satisfactory references, and approval by Head of Discipline or his nominee; and may require a satisfactory interview,
    a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

Please attach a copy of your CV, passport, letter of employment, testamur, and two written work references to your application. If you are on a SET program, you do not need to provide references, but evidence of SET.

It is preferable at least one reference be from a Consultant or Fellow and the second from a Registrar who has worked with you in a supervisory capacity. They do not need to be lengthy however they should state a bit about your work ethic and ambitions for a career in Surgery.
