Jo Gillespie, PhD Candidate

Jo holds degrees in Arts (Geography Honours) and Law. Jo returned to study to pursue a PhD based at the World Heritage site of Angkor Archaeological Park, Cambodia. Drawing on her background in the legal profession Jo is pursuing research which is designed to assess the impact of the World Heritage classification on local communities. Jo is tracing how the ideals of protection enunciated in the World Heritage Convention transcend scales and are translated into local land use laws. The influence of the legally plural landscape setting, the relative importance of security of tenure and the process of territorialisation are themes explored in this research. The analysis is also concerned with the complex relationship between law and geography and contributes to a growing literature in the field of legal geography.
Jo’s research is supported by the Australian Research Council funded “Living with Heritage” Linkage Project.
