Make Friends With The Con

The doors of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music are now more open than ever to new music, new audiences and old friends.
The magic castle on Macquarie Street by the Royal Botanic Gardens, commissioned by Governor Macquarie in 1817, is a Sydney icon.
A part of the University of Sydney, the NSW Government in 2000 gave it the transformation it deserved as Australia’s premier music institution.
The Dean and Principal, Professor Kim Walker invites everyone to enjoy a special, closer involvement with the life and work of The Con.
Friends of The Con receive
- Exclusive invitations to special events.
- Discounted tickets to a huge selection of concerts.
- Opportunities to meet the artists at post-concert receptions.
- Invitations to other events in Sydney’s cultural precinct.

Sydney University Open Day 2010
Sydney University Open Day at The Con, 28 August 2010. Volunteers are once again centre stage – supporting The Con.
Many visitors to The Con have remarked on the friendly welcome they receive from the Volunteers, in their striking red and black scarves. Their enthusiastic support for a wide range of musical events and activities is very much appreciated at a time when funds for music education are scarce and every dollar counts. The Con’s loyal volunteers now deliver over 300 hours of invaluable voluntary assistance every month.
Volunteers Jan Biber and Alan Stewart were photographed by fellow volunteer Philip Summers.
Friends' event with the NSW State Library

The first collaborative event with the Friends of the State Library was held on 21 July 2010.
Friends from The Con and the State Library gathered in the magnificent original reading room of the Mitchell Building. Friends were enthralled by author and lecturer Diane Collins’ description of the early years at the Con and tales of the fascinating musicians who established the music school in 1915.
Rare archival material from the State Library collection was displayed to enlighten the Friends and a Conrad Martens 1842 painting of the early Macquarie/Greenway stables building – part of the Library collection, was on display.
The Con Swan Quartet played music written by the early director of The Con – Alfred Hill.
