Asset mix
Bequests and donated endowed funds form the majority of the University’s long-term funds. Under the University’s strategic and tactical asset allocation framework, around 70 percent of the investable funds are allocated to growth investments with the balance in debt investments (considered a ‘defensive’ asset class). Growth assets comprise a range of asset classes (including alternative assets) and are managed externally by professional fund managers.
At the end of December 2009, the benchmark target weights for the approved asset classes were:
| Asset class | Defensive/Growth | Benchmark target weights (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Debt | Defensive | 25.0 |
| Long-term cash | Defensive | 6.0 |
| Australian equities | Growth | 33.0 |
| International equities | Growth | 18.0 |
| REITs | Growth | 5.0 |
| Infrastructure | Growth | 5.0 |
| Private equity | Growth | 1.0 |
| Global balanced | Growth | 7.0 |
