Biographical details

Alan Maddox’s research and teaching focuses mainly on the history and performance practice of European music before 1800, and on music in Australian colonial society (1788-1900). His doctoral research was on the influence of classical rhetoric on the performance practice of Italian vocal music in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and this remains a major focus of his research. Recent publications include articles on rhetoric and performance practice in eighteenth-century opera and sacred music, and on music and prison reform in the nineteenth-century penal colony on Norfolk Island. He is currently working on a book on the performance practice of Italian recitative.

Alan is a member of the National Committee of the Musicological Society of Australia, an Associate Investigator with the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions, and a member of several research groups including the Sydney Intellectual History Network, and the international rhetoric research network Grasping Kairos.

Recent conference presentations include papers at Rethinking Intellectual History (Sydney, 2015), the 16th Biennial International Conference on Baroque Music (Salzburg, 2014), the David Nichol Smith Seminar in Eighteenth-Century Studies (Sydney, 2014), the 2nd Performance Studies Network International Conference (Cambridge, 2014), Bach Network UK Biennial Dialogue Meeting (Warsaw, 2013), the 16th international conference of Antiquæ Musicæ Italicæ Studiosi – Como (Padua, Italy, 2013), Congress of the International Musicological Society (Rome, 2012), the 2nd International Conference on Music and Emotion (Perth, 2011), and the 8th Biennial Conference for Music in 19th-Century Britain (Belfast, 2011).

An accomplished singer, Alan has performed professionally with Opera Australia and as a freelance artist in Europe and Australia. He is also a respected music writer and public lecturer, giving regular pre-concert talks for the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and for Musica Viva, as well as writing book and recording reviews for journals including Early Music, Musicology Australia and Music Forum.

Teaching and supervision

Teaching Philosophy

To me, teaching is a dialogue in which students contribute, interact and explore, participating in constructing meaning from materials provided by the teacher, worked out with other students, or sought out by themselves. The teacher?s role is to facilitate this process so that students are supported in building topic-specific knowledge, but also, and just as importantly, in learning how to learn. I therefore try to make my teaching student-centred and research-based, modelling skills in finding, analysing and synthesising information, and in applying knowledge and skills to new situations.

Learning generally works best when teachers use multiple approaches to teaching and assessment (aural/oral, visual, text based) to engage students with different learning styles. Much of my teaching is seminar based, requiring students to actively engage with primary and secondary materials and develop their research, writing and presentation skills. Practical subjects like Aural Perception and performance practice also require focus on psychomotor (skills based) learning. A teacher?s enthusiasm for the subject matter and personal valuing of the learning process also goes a long way to enthusing students with learning.

I try to encourage and support students, always bearing in mind that they come from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds and that for each student (like each lecturer) formal study is one part of a process of life-long learning, and of learning about life.
