Biographical details

Elisabeth Mitchelmore was born in Germany and graduated from the Stuttgart College of Music with the equivalent of a BMus with a double major in violin performance and violin pedagogy. She then studied violin at the Conservatoire de Musique in Geneva and later obtained a Graduate Diploma in Music (Performance) at Sydney University. Elisabeth has also participated in numerous masterclasses in Italy, Germany and Switzerland. Her teachers include Werner Keltsch, Georg Baynov, Werner Grobholz and Nora Chastain (Germany); Corrado Romano (Switzerland); and Charmian Gadd (Australia).

Elisabeth has had an extensive career as an orchestral musician. Her first full-time position was with the Stuttgart Opera Orchestra and was followed by a permanent position with the Munich Chamber Orchestra. She toured widely in Europe, Russia, Southeast Asia and America, made numerous recordings and broadcasts for the Bavarian Radio, and performed with world-class soloists such as Rostropovich and Anne Sophie Mutter. She also participated in such famous music festivals as the Salzburg Mozart Festival, the Luzern Festival, the Bruckner Festival and the Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele. Since coming to Australia, Elisabeth has played with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and for many years with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra.

Elisabeth has also been active in the chamber music field both in Europe and Australia. She was founder and leader of the Amabile Players and presented a regular series of concerts with her group. She has recorded for 2MBS-FM and ABC radio, including first performances of Australian compositions. She has also worked with Arvo Pärt during the Sydney Festival, recorded music for films and played on live television shows.

Elisabeth has been teaching at the Sydney Conservatorium for many years in both pre-tertiary and tertiary programs. Several of her former students are now playing in established orchestras or teaching music in schools. Elisabeth also runs private studios in Hornsby and Copacabana and has established herself as one of the most sought after violin teachers in the Sydney area. Many of her private students have received their AMEB Associate and/or Licentiate Diplomas, a number have won Eisteddfod competitions and others have been successful in gaining music scholarships.

Elisabeth has given masterclasses for music teachers and students on behalf of AMEB, AUSTA and the Newcastle Music Teachers’ Association and presented at a recent violin pedagogy conference held at the Sydney Conservatorium. She is an AMEB diploma examiner and a member for the Federal AMEB Syllabus and Publications Committee. Elisabeth is also a master’s level music education examiner.
