Biographical details

Rachel Campbell is a Lecturer in Musicology at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney. Her research and teaching are focused on the history and analysis of twentieth and twenty-first century classical music, especially Australian music and its relationship with Australian culture and history.

Rachel’s education was in musicology and Australian cultural history. She has also worked as a journalist of recent classical music, interviewing numerous local and international composers and writing for Ensemble Offspring, ELISION, Symphony Australia, the Sydney Festival, and RealTime.

Her PhD analysed Peter Sculthorpe’s Irkanda period music in relation to Australian cultural history, historiography and nationalism.

Current projects

Rachel is currently writing about the the history of Australian musical nationalism, the beginnings of Peter Sculthorpe’s career, representation of Australian Indigenous culture in music, the reception of John Antill’s Corroboree, and Australian music historiography.
