Teaching Philosophy

The overarching aim of my pedagogy is to foster independence through developing critical thinking, intelligent musicians. Acquiring a thorough knowledge of style, structure, harmony and the composer’s language, and how this shapes interpretation is vital. This knowledge cannot be applied meaningfully however without a thorough technical grounding. My technical methodology draws from the great traditions of the American and Russian Schools (Galamian, Yankelevich, Oistrakh). I develop efficient movements based upon the natural physiology of the body, where ease and freedom from excess tension and injury is a focus. Coordination and facility around the instrument is developed through a comprehensive study of scales, études and exercises and a carefully sequenced but broad progression of repertoire. I engage in a reflective practice of teaching where the progression of study, while highly structured is based on the individual needs of each student. I believe in encouraging students’ artistic individuality, but also giving them the technical and musical knowledge necessary to grow as artists, interpret music more profoundly and achieve success in varying roles in the professional world.
