Mr Stuart Johnson


Biographical details

Stuart Johnson switched from violin to viola after undergraduate study and freelancing as a violinist. After relocating to Sydney, Stuart became involved with the Sydney Sinfonia program and began freelancing with the Sydney Symphony as a violist. Soon after he was awarded a place within the Sydney Symphony Fellowship program and appeared as a James Fairfax Young Artist. In 2003, Stuart was offered a place at the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne. As a violist, Stuart has performed with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Australian Chamber Orchestra and featured as a soloist with Orchestra Victoria. He has held a permanent position with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and joined the Sydney Symphony viola section permanently in 2009. In addition, Stuart often performs as a chamber musician and has featured in a number of broadcasts for ABC Classic FM. Stuart has taught on staff at the University of Melbourne and continues to be involved in orchestral tutoring and individual mentoring with Sydney Sinfonia and the Australian Youth Orchestra. He currently teaches viola at the Sydney Conservatorium and Conservatorium High School.
