The University of Sydney

Biographical details

Ursula Caporali obtained MA degrees with high distinction in both piano (1995) and composition from the Conservatorium of Milan (2005) and Florence (2008), studying composition with Danieli, Gorli, Garuti, Rotondi and Cardi.

As a pianist she has performed as soloist and in various ensembles in Italy and across Europe with repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary music (which she has a special interest in promoting). Many of her piano students in Italy have entered various conservatories and now follow professional careers.

As a composer, she has been successful in gaining many scholarships including the Polytechnic University of Milan 2001 and the Accademia Chigiana di Siena 2003. In 2006 she was selected for a special course on sound design organized by Tempo Reale founded by Luciano Berio in Florence. Ursula’s varied compositions for soloists through to orchestra include Harp etude, Gedanken und Fragmente (piano), Dysnomia, Know the Unknown, Pax Tibulliana (orchestra/choir) and from 2006, with a growing interest in electronics, Implemented Mozart and Blake’s Project. The Sydney Piano Concert she performed at the Conservatorium of Florence Theatre in 2008 was highly acclaimed. Actively composing for theatre, Ursula’s first ballet Paesaggi premiered in Fiesole Romanic theatre in 1997, and for a satellite program she composed the opening music, Gerico 2000, published by ASI Italia. Ursula is especially keen on opera for young performers and has written nine such works, with the most recently produced being The Young Boy Tut and The Rain Forest, both performed by one hundred school students from both Prato and Florence in 2010-2011.

Ursula is currently undertaking a PhD in composition with Dr Michael Smetanin, for which she was awarded an IPRS scholarship from the Australian Government and is writing a portfolio of pieces amongst which Shabtis for orchestra and gamelan was performed in 2010 by the Sydney Conservatorium Orchestra. Her new lyric opera “An Italian in Ethiopia” will be performed in 2013.
