The University welcomed 27,000 visitors on 31 August for its largest event of the year, Open Day.

The University of Sydney today thanked the future students, their families, members of the community and University staff who helped to make Open Day 2013 a tremendous success.

Vice-Chancellor Dr Michael Spence said the feedback from prospective students had been overwhelmingly positive.

"Open Day is one of my favourite days of the year, when the next generation of students and their families meet our amazing people and explore our campuses," Dr Spence said.

This year the University offered dozens of mini-lectures, campus tours and student society displays, including a working formula racing car designed and constructed by mechanical engineering students. Also popular were live performances from bands and a Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning workshop which produced a large-scale topographical map of the lands in TV series Game of Thrones.

Most importantly, thousands of conversations took place between potential students and their future teachers.

"Open Day is a really important opportunity for many future students - they use the day not only to find out about courses, but also to get a feel for life on campus and the student experience we offer," Dr Spence said.

"At the University of Sydney, students are taught by inspiring and dedicated teachers, many of whom are international leaders in their fields.

"Those visiting us today learned that they will join a community of academic excellence where they will study in an environment that supports and encourages them every step of the way.

"We look forward to seeing many of those we met today when they begin their University of Sydney experience in February," he said.
