New Vice-Principal (Operations) for the University of Sydney

18 July 2014

The University of Sydney today announced it had appointed Sara Watts, currently Chief Financial Officer for IBM Australia and New Zealand, as the University's first Vice-Principal (Operations).

An alumna of the University, Sara has been at IBM for more than 28 years. She held a number of senior executive roles for the Australia/New Zealand and Asia Pacific regions before becoming CFO in 2008. She has led large teams in transforming business and financial models to support rapidly changing environments, driven in part by developments in cloud computing and the use of social and mobile technologies.

When she joins the University on 11 August, she will have direct responsibility for four of the key professional service units that support the University's operations: Campus Infrastructure and Services (CIS), Finance, Human Resources (HR), and Information and Communications Technologies (ICT).

"I look forward to Sara bringing this experience to the University," said University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor and Principal Dr Michael Spence.

"As we continue to implement our strategic plan - including our aspiration to support collaborative, cross-disciplinary initiatives in all fields of research and education - the professional service units will play an increasingly important role in delivering coordinated and cost-effective services to support all parts of the University."

Sara also sits on the board of Vision Australia, chairs the Audit Committee of the Victorian Auditor General's Office, and was on the board of Sydney Philharmonia Choirs from 2006 until earlier this year.
