University of Sydney welcomes appointment of Gabrielle Upton to Minister for Sport and Recreation

30 August 2013

University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor Dr Michael Spence today congratulated Gabrielle Upton MP on her promotion to the Cabinet position of Minister for Sport and Recreation in the NSW Government, and welcomed Cronulla MP, Mr Mark Speakman, into the role of Parliamentary Secretary for Tertiary Education and Skills.

Since her election in 2011, Gabrielle has made an important contribution to the NSW higher education sector in her role as the state's first Parliamentary Secretary with specific responsibility for coordinating the Government's approach to tertiary education and skills development.

Over the last two and half years Gabrielle has greatly enhanced levels of understanding within the NSW Government about the importance of the tertiary education sector as the NSW economy's largest services export sector, second largest export earner overall, and great potential driver of future economic growth.

Gabrielle has worked particularly hard to increase levels of consultation and coordination between the university sector and government, and has had notable achievements in developing the Government's International Education and Research Action Plan, enabling governance reform, reducing regulatory burdens and red-tape, and enhancing pathways to post-school education to name but a few.

While the University of Sydney will miss working with Gabrielle, we wish her well in her new portfolio and are very pleased that the Premier and Minister for Education will retain the position of Parliamentary Secretary for Tertiary Education and Skills. The position is an important one, and is making an tangible difference in terms of dialogue and strategic engagement between the Government and the State's universities.

We look forward to briefing new Parliamentary Secretary, Mark Speakman, and to working with him to continue to enhance the international competitiveness of the State's tertiary education sector.
