The University of Sydney will welcome Nobel Peace Prize winner Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to Sydney in November.
The University will bestow an honorary doctorate on Aung San Suu Kyi during her first visit to Australia at a special ceremony in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House on Wednesday 27 November, co-hosted by the Sydney Opera House and the University of Technology, Sydney.
Aung San Suu Kyi will speak at the Sydney Opera House on Wednesday 27 November in an event co-presented by UTS, the University of Sydney and the Sydney Opera House.
The award reflects the University of Sydney's active engagement in the region through the Sydney Southeast Asia Centre and our long-standing support of the world's foremost thinkers and contributors.
"It is not overstating the contribution of Aung San Suu Kyi to say that she has transformed her nation while becoming a major symbol of democracy around the world," said Dr Michael Spence, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Sydney.
"She is an inspiration to our staff and students, in particular to the members of our Sydney Southeast Asia Centre, where we aim to enhance our understandings of Australia's nearest neighbours and to engage with the region's policy makers to enhance our shared future."
The Sydney Southeast Asia Centre, which launched in November 2012, has one of the highest concentrations of Southeast Asian regional expertise in the world, with more than 200 academics and honoraries working on and in the region.
The centre brings these scholars together on topics like infectious diseases, emergency management, the environment, food security, human mobility and regional economic integration.
