University of Sydney hosts breast cancer consumer event
12 March 2014
The University of Sydney Cancer Research Network is hosting a consumer awareness evening today to share the latest developments in cancer research and educate the community about improvements in diagnosis and treatment.
Leading researchers from the University will empower consumers with better health information, including advances in medical imaging and teaching that have improved diagnosis.
Professor Patrick Brennan from the Faculty of Health Sciences and Chair of the University of Sydney Breast Cancer Special Interest Group said it is vital to arm people with the best health information, particularly if they have a genetic predisposition to cancer.
"Our experts will present on a range of topics including insights into prevention and treatment. They will also weigh in on the breast screening debate and discuss the critical issues of ensuring the wellbeing of survivors following treatment," said Professor Brennan.
"Scientists and researchers will also be on hand to share their expertise in the field and address lingering or unanswered questions from the audience.
"The consumer evening is an opportunity to empower health consumers and educate them about the considerable scientific advances in recent years around understanding the stages of cancer development, which is driving improved research and leading to better prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer."
The University of Sydney Breast Cancer Special Interest Group was established in 2012 to engage with the community and ensure cancer patients and their families are aware of the world-class research undertaken at the University.
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Australia, with one in eight women developing the disease in their lifetime*. Every day researchers are making breakthroughs in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment to improve survival rates.
