The University of Sydney is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Diane Mayer as Dean of the Faculty of Education and Social Work.
A distinguished scholar in teacher education, Professor Mayer is currently a Pro Vice-Chancellor at Victoria University. When she commences at Sydney on 3 November, she will join a rigorous and vibrant faculty that sits in the top 10 education faculties in the world.
"This is an exciting appointment for the University," said University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor and Principal Dr Michael Spence.
"Professor Mayer will bring more than 20 years of experience in university leadership to this role, having worked at institutions such as the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Queensland. We are thrilled that she will be joining the University of Sydney as the Dean of Education and Social Work," said Dr Spence.
Professor Mayer holds a Master of Education from the University of Canberra and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Southern Queensland.
She has previously served as Head of the School of Education at Deakin University and Associate Dean for Professional Programs at the University of California, Berkeley, and will bring to Sydney a wealth of research knowledge in the areas of teacher education and teacher induction.
On her appointment, Professor Diane Mayer said: "I am delighted to be taking up the position of Dean of the Faculty of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney. I am very much looking forward to working with the Faculty to further build their national and international profile in teaching and research and to working with the university's leadership."
"In NSW and across Australia, issues associated with teacher quality are attracting much political and professional debate," said Professor Mayer, "and I am especially looking forward to engaging in these debates drawing on my own research and experience as well as that of colleagues in the Faculty."
Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Stephen Garton mirrored these sentiments by saying "I look forward to working with Professor Mayer as she builds further the teaching and research profile of our Faculty of Education and Social Work, including through leading engagement in the important national and state debates on education."
Professor Garton also thanked Associate Professor Fran Waugh for her outstanding contribution as Acting Dean since early 2012.
"She leaves a strong legacy for the incoming dean, and I wish her well as she returns to focus on her research career in social work and policy studies,” Professor Garton said.
