US Studies Centre appoints distinguished legal policy expert

1 February 2010

The United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney is pleased to announce the appointment of the former President of the Australian Law Reform Commission, Emeritus Professor David Weisbrot AM, as Professor of Legal Policy.

Professor Weisbrot led the peak body advising the Australian government on law reform for the past decade, chairing major national inquiries into legal policy issues including the protection of human genetic information, gene patenting, privacy and sedition laws, federal secrecy laws and the federal civil justice system.

An internationally renowned expert on the ethical and legal regulation of new technologies, information and privacy law, and federalism and the law, Professor Weisbrot will undertake research and commentary at the US Studies Centre on American legal issues and their implications for Australia.

Announcing the appointment, US Studies Centre chief executive Professor Geoffrey Garrett said Professor Weisbrot would increase the breadth, and add to the distinction, of the Centre's academics and experts.

"Professor Weisbrot brings to the Centre decades of high level experience in legal policy making and analysis", said Professor Garrett. "His understanding of American law and its complex interactions with politics and policy at different levels of government will prove invaluable."

Professor Weisbrot said he was excited at the prospect of working at the US Studies Centre. "There are many striking similarities—as well as remarkable differences—between the American and Australian systems of government and their justices that I look forward to exploring further at the Centre," said Professor Weisbrot.

Professor Weisbrot will hold his post at the US Studies Centre in conjunction with his recent appointment as a Professor of Law and Governance at Macquarie University. He is also a member of the Human Genetics Advisory Committee of the National Health and Medical Research Council.

An Emeritus Professor of Law and Honorary Fellow of Medicine at the University of Sydney, Professor Weisbrot was formerly Dean of Law and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Humanities and Social Sciences. He holds a Juris Doctor degree from UCLA, and is admitted to the Bars of California and New South Wales.
