Xiao (Cathy) YU, an MPhil student under the supervision of Dr Josiah Poon from the TCM Academic Group, has won the student prize of Excellence in Innovation in the Research Conversazione 2012, organised by the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies.

Sydnovate, the commercialisation arm of the University of Sydney, offers this prize to undergraduate and postgraduate students (or teams of students) who come up with a novel new concept, invention or scientific discovery with considerable commercial potential.

"Information Extraction from Chinese Text" is the title of Cathy's work. The strength of this system lies in her flexibility to define extraction patterns to adapt to different domains. For example, the first application was to extract from Chinese medical journals the formula names, herbs used, their dosages and clinical trial details. The second application demonstrated the extraction of person's name, previous and new position, previous and current department details in the personnel movement of Chinese government officials.

With this tool extracting structured information from unstructured Chinese text, we can closely follow what happens in China by monitoring her research, innovation, markets, scientific and business intelligence.
