Justice for Bo Xilai and Chen Guangcheng

The South China Morning Post published an opinion piece titled "Justice for Bo Xilai and Chen Guangcheng?" by China Studies Centre Director, Dr Kerry Brown, and Academic Director, Professor David Goodman, on 21 May, 2012.

In their analyses, they argued that although the cases of Bo Xilai and Chen Guangcheng are different, they shine a spotlight on China's key obstacle to modernity - how to deliver justice without fear or favour.

"China's challenges in the next few years are predominantly seen in terms of managing huge economic imbalances, dealing with issues of sustainability, maintaining stability and making the transition to a middle-income country by 2020. But these two cases - of a person once very powerful, and the other at the opposite end of the power spectrum - show that the real challenge is how justice is dispensed"
