2012 SOwFI Conference Wrap-up

12 November 2012

Over two days in early November, students enrolled in the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment's 4-year undergraduate degree programs presented their final-year research project findings at the annual Stepping Out with Fresh Ideas (SOwFI) conference. Research projects covered a broad range of topics associated with agricultural and resource economics, agricultural and environmental science, climatic change, food security, sustainable resource management and mining. This was the fifth SOwFI conference sponsored by the Faculty.

Working with Faculty and industry supervisors, the students developed new research skills, and experience in data analysis, during their candidature. The students presented their research project results in both oral presentations and poster sessions. The research projects are part of the Faculty's embedded honours year, and the students were assessed at the conference on their oral and poster presentations.

Several students were recognised for their achievements and awarded prizes. The Best Oral Presentation (Agricultural Sciences) was awarded to Susannah Miechels (Bachelor of Land and Water Science) with commendations presented to Steven Drysdale (Bachelor of Land and Water Science) and Emily Tubb (Bachelor of Horticultural Science). The Best Oral Presentation Award for the Agricultural and Resource Economics students went to Ellana Brand (Bachelor of Resource Economics), with commendations awarded to Alexander Jury (Bachelor of Resource Economics) and Emma Patrick (Bachelor of Agricultural Economics). The Poster Award winners included Celine Ghabach (Bachelor of Land and Water Science) for the Best Poster in the science program, with Rebekah Niall (Bachelor of Horticultural Science) and Alice Thurgood (Bachelor of Land and Water Science) each receiving a commendation award. Among the Agricultural and Resource Economics students, Gabrielle Debreceny (Bachelor of Resource Economics) received the Best Poster Award with commendations going to Benjamin Church (Bachelor of Agricultural Economics) and Hugh Stump (Bachelor of Agricultural Economics). In addition, Jeremy Brown (Bachelor of Science in Agriculture) took home the 'People's Choice Award' for his poster, which was awarded by Bob Fozzard of the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology.
