2013 RD Watt Lecture by Dr David Whitehead
17 March 2013
FOOD FOR THE FUTURE - INCREASING PRODUCTIVITY FROM LAND WITHIN ENVIRONMENTAL LIMITS
This year's lecture was held as part of the launch of the new Centre for Carbon, Water and Food on 6 March and was delivered by the Chief Scientist of Landcare Research in New Zealand, Dr David Whitehead.
Dr Whitehead's research, like that of the new Centre is in the critical area of sustainable food production for an increasing world population.
The growing emphasis on production and profit, particularly in developing countries, could compromise ecosystem integrity, soil security and efficient resource management in the long term.
We heard from Dr Whitehead about the challenges he shares with researchers at the Centre for Carbon, Water and Food - the importance of securing food for the future.
The annual RD Watt Lecture commemorates the first lecture delivered to University of Sydney agriculture students in March 1911 by Australia's first Professor of Agriculture, Robert Dickie Watt.
